Before You Head Out
Heads up! Whether you’re coming from Salt Lake, Ogden, or Provo, it’s about a 1.5-hour (or more) drive each way. Towns are few and far between, so plan ahead—fill up on gas and take a bathroom stop in Tooele or at the Bonneville Speedway exit before heading out.
WHAT TO BRING
Plan for Sun
The Salt Flats are completely open, which creates incredible light but also full sun exposure. Sunglasses, hats, and sun protection are highly recommended unless we’re lucky enough to have an overcast day.
Plan for the Weather
Always better to be prepared! The Flats can be windier than expected, and temperatures may feel cooler than anticipated in colder months. Consider layers and hairstyle options accordingly. Rain is rare, but if it occurs, we’ll continue shooting unless conditions are unsafe for you, me, or my equipment.
Don’t Miss Sunset
Stick around after sunset—the sky often transforms into magical shades of pink and gold. Some of the most breathtaking sunsets I’ve ever seen have been here (and trust me, I’ve seen a LOT!). You’re welcome to take your own photos afterward, but during the session, we’ll stay focused so everyone can enjoy the moment and get the best images possible.
directions
from Salt Lake City
Exit the airport and follow signs to Interstate 80 West toward Reno. Merge onto I-80 West and stay on it for roughly 110–120 miles. You’ll pass through or near Tooele, Grantsville, Delle, and Knolls.
Take Exit 4 – Bonneville Speedway just before Wendover on the Utah side. At the end of the ramp, turn right (north)onto Leppy Pass Rd / Bonneville Speedway Rd and continue for about 1.2 miles.
At the bend or fork in the road, bear right (east) onto the Bonneville Speedway access road and continue for 3–4 milesuntil you reach the paved cul-de-sac, commonly called the "boat ramp." This is the standard parking and access point to the flats and speedway.
You’ve arrived! The cul-de-sac/parking area coordinates are 40°45'45.3"N, 113°53'46.3"W.
